Bengali is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language, which evolved around 1000-1200 CE. It is written using the Bengali alphabet and has the distinctive horizontal line which links symbols in the same word together across the top. This line is called মাত্রা matra. Culture in Bangladesh is closely tied with religion. Over 90% of the population is Muslim, and another 8% are Hindi. For this reason, greetings can be specific to religious identification for an individual, or group of people. Here are some greetings common to most Bangladeshi people.
