Folkmoot is a two-week celebration of world’s cultural heritage through folk music and dance. Folkmoot 2019 – Lantern Parade @ Folkmoot Friendship Center

Starting in the heart of the Hazelwood business district, Folkmoot, Daydreamz Project and the Town of Waynesville will host a lantern procession on the evening of Thursday, July 25th.
 
At 8:30 pm, folks will gather at the plott hound statue in the Town of Waynesville parking lot. At 9pm, the lantern parade will proceed down Hazelwood Avenue and towards the Folkmoot Center on Virginia Avenue.
 
Daydreamz Project, an organization specializing in providing access to arts to marginalized populations, will work with the community throughout the spring to coordinate handmade lantern-making events. The community is encouraged to make a paper lantern for maximum enjoyment of the lantern procession. To get involved in lantern-making, contact the Folkmoot office, 828-452-2997.

Join Folkmoot for an afternoon matinee at Queen Auditorium. Festival matinees include all international cultural groups and offer opportunities for interaction with performers. Without exception, the auditorium is the most intimate performance space of the festival.

Canton and BearWaters Brewery welcome Folkmoot dancers and musicians to Sorrells Park for an international craft beer, live music, and food truck fair. This inaugural event will feature live music, international pavilions hosted by visiting groups from Colombia, Romania and Nepal and local and regional vendors.

Lake Junaluska, Stuart Auditorium is the setting for Folkmoot’s 2019 closing performance. A beautiful and meaningful expression of international goodwill and the bonds that have been built during the festival, the Closing includes a presentation of flags, performances by all participating cultures, the “Circassian Circle” dance and a moving candlelight procession of groups through the audience. The Candlelight Closing is perhaps the most enthusiastic, heartfelt show of Folkmoot.
