On October 28th and 29th, Folkmoot opens the historic Hazelwood School for the second annual Spookmoot Haunted Schoolhouse. Participants will get face-to-face with the ghouls and spirits that reside in the school along with frightening internationally-themed characters who danced at Folkmoot Festival and refused to go home.

Frightening folk tales come alive in the halls of Haunted Hazelwood School from 8:00pm until midnight. This experience will feature the haunted school walk, popular food trucks, games of corn hole and pumpkin catapults in the back of the building, while you wait. Scares include several adrenaline junkie favorites and folklore characters that will make your blood run cold.    

Tickets with set tour times can be purchased in advance for $15 at Folkmoot.org or by calling (828) 452-2997. Haunted Hall participants must be 12 years old or older. Parking is best in back of the school.

Eritrea Friendship Night @ Folkmoot Friendship Center

Join Folkmoot for an international evening of dance and cuisine from Eritrea. Summer staff members, Metkel and Michael Tecle will be joined by their family in preparing and sharing East African culture on November 5, 2016 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

The Tecle family will prepare a delicious meals with three kinds of meats and vegetables. Enjoy homemade Eritrean coffee and tea with fresh Eritrean bread and participate in learning a traditional dance taught by the Tecle family.

Tickets for this event can be purchased in advance, $20 for adults, $10 for kids, at Folkmoot.org or by calling (828) 452-2997. Tickets will also be available at the door, $28 for adult, $10 for kids.

Folkmoot’s year-round programming initiatives have been made possible by the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina and the Cherokee Preservation Foundation.

Join Folkmoot, in celebrating the revitalization of the historic Hazelwood School. Walk the halls, reminisce, eat and enjoy the stories of Donald Davis

Donald Davis was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories, surrounded by a family of traditional storytellers who told him gentle fairy tales, simple and silly Jack tales, scary mountain lore, ancient Welsh and Scottish folktales, and most importantly, nourishing, true-to-life stories of his own neighbors and kin. Featured at festivals throughout the U.S. and world, Davis is also known as a prolific author, producer of books and CDs, and as a guest host for NPR’s Good Evening. Davis is a recipient of the NSN ORACLE Circle of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement awards.

Timeline:

– 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Dinner served “lunchroom style”
– 7:00 pm, Donald Davis Storytelling

All friends of Folkmoot are invited to the second annual Folkmoot Falala on Friday, December 9, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.  The free event – Folkmoot’s way of wishing the community and its supporters a happy holiday – includes an evening of music and pie and will take place in the Sam Love Queen Auditorium at the Folkmoot Friendship Center.

 

The event will feature music from Blue Ridge Big Band, Celtic Crew, Possum on a Whale and Blackberry Jam. Guests are invited to sing-a-long and even bring a musical instrument for jamming with the performers.  Additionally, guests are encouraged to bring a favorite holiday pie or sweets to share with friends, familiar and new!

On Saturday night, January 14th, 6pm until 9pm, Folkmoot welcomes the New Year’s Resolution Zumba group to the Friendship Center Multipurpose Room. This group of friends is challenging the community to start the new year right, by dancing and socializing the evening away with friends dedicated to their personal health and wellness.

 

Instructors, Thomas Greenarch, Brandy Moorefield, Cindi Manning, Julie Johnson, Marzena Caldwell and Taylor Lyle will teach cool dance moves to exhilarating music and will talk to guests about getting on the right track with their fitness goals for 2017.

 

Participants are encouraged to arrive on time in order to get registered. The fee is $10 and can be paid at the door. Please bring a bottled water and a towel.

Folkmoot is partnering with Western Carolina University’s Office of International Programs & Services to celebrate the year of the rooster with a Chinese New Year celebration in Waynesville. This lively event will feature Chinese food, crafts and traditional Chinese New Year activities Saturday, January 28 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

Da Asian Kitchen will prepare egg rolls, fried rice, white rice, vegetable stir fry, chicken and vegetable stir fry and a dessert for attendees. WCU students and faculty will assist with hands-on new year activities and cultural sharing. Advance tickets for Folkmoot’s Chinese New Year are $8 for kids, $10 for adults and $35 for families of four or more. In its efforts to bring more year-round cultural programming to the region, Folkmoot is partnering with The Classic Wineseller for a fundraising event to purchase stage curtains in the Sam Love Queen Auditorium. The evening will feature tasty wine, live music and delicious food at The Classic Wineseller located at 20 Church Street in Waynesville on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

With its strategic plan to renovate the Historic Hazelwood School and fill it with arts and cultural programming, Folkmoot has solidified and strengthened its partnerships with organizations like Haywood Regional Medical Center, the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, and the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. Events like international dinners, a quilt show, historical lectures and family-fun programs like “Spookmoot” were made possible by such support. “Adding new partners like The Classic Wineseller is another opportunity for community outreach that will help us grow creative activities and programs that speak to the value of cultural understanding,” noted Folkmoot Executive Director, Angie Schwab. “They are strong supporters of Waynesville and Haywood County and we are honored to partner with them.”

The menu will include a first course that is chef’s choice amuse bouche (chef’s selection); second course choice of either caesar salad or tomato bisque; third course choices of tuscan pasta, chicken marsala or italian shrimp scampi, and fourth course dessert of California cheesecake with a choice of chocolate port or raspberry port sauce.
